It was moved about 150 feet southwest in 2003 and now serves as an inn.","why_significant":"The nomination argues for significance under Criterion C at the local level because the house is a rare example in Orange County of an Italianate/Greek Revival dwelling that evolved into a Second Empire-style house. The mansard roof was added in 1891. It is also one of about a dozen surviving antebellum residences in the town and one of the best preserved. The 2003 move met Criteria Consideration B.","narrative":"Chestnut Hill is a two-story frame house on a low brick foundation at the south end of Orange, Virginia. Alexander Daley, an Irish immigrant who ran a tanyard, leather dealership and shoe factory, built it around 1860 in a blend of Italianate and Greek Revival styles. In 1891 the Macon family replaced the original low roof with a mansard roof, adding an attic story and a Second Empire character. Interior woodwork, mantels and stair details remain largely original. The house was slated for demolition in 2003 for a school access road, but it was sold and moved intact about 150 feet southwest, along with a small shed, to a site with the same orientation. The foundation was rebuilt, a rear wing was added, and the rehabilitation followed federal standards. It is listed for architecture as the only individually listed Orange County house that evolved from Italianate/Greek Revival to Second Empire, and it now operates as an inn.","period_of_significance":"1860-1891","architect_builder":"Alexander Daley (original owner)","architectural_style":"Late 19th & Early 20th Century Revival: Greek Revival, Italianate (with Second Empire mansard roof)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated after the 2003 move and operated as an inn; a rear addition was completed in 2006.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.792906-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/6823/41682354/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000417.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000417/49789e1246-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000417/49789e1246-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chestnut_Hill_from_the_intersection,_Orange,_VA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chestnut_Hill_from_the_intersection,_Orange,_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682354","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chestnut_Hill_(Orange,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15209555"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/orange-county/chestnut-hill-09000417/"}
