An original hand water pump in the yard is counted as a contributing structure.","why_significant":"The school was built with Rosenwald Fund money and heavy local African American labor and support, and it served grades one through seven until 1962. It is argued to be an intact example of the Rosenwald 'One Teacher Plan No. 1' and of the impact of Virginia's 'separate but equal' education policy. It retains most of its original fabric on its original site.","narrative":"Shady Grove School is a one-room frame schoolhouse on Three Chopt Road near Gum Spring, Louisa County. Completed in 1925, it was built for African American children with money from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, county funds and contributions from the local community. The total cost was $1,500, of which the community raised $700. A patrons' league led by George Walter Hayden spent years seeking approval and funding, as surviving letters show. The building follows a standard Rosenwald one-teacher plan, with tall banks of windows, two cloak rooms, an industrial room and a chevron-patterned board interior that remains largely intact. It taught grades one through seven until 1962. A state education supervisor called it one of the best one-room schools in Virginia. Today it is vacant and deteriorated, though former students are working to restore it. It is one of two Rosenwald schools built in Louisa County and one of the better preserved.","period_of_significance":"1925 - 1962","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other (Rosenwald One-Teacher Plan No. 1 school)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant for many years and in deteriorated condition; a group of former students is working to restore it.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.14231-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/31/6787/41678731/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000416.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000416/fe918ad601-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000416/fe918ad601-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shady_Grove_School_near_Gum_Spring.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shady_Grove_School_near_Gum_Spring.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678731","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shady_Grove_School_(Louisa_County,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713196"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/louisa-county/shady-grove-school-09000416/"}
