The house has unusual features, including a curved and chamfered log bracket under a projecting plate, and grained and marbled interior finishes related to a decorative painting tradition in nearby North Carolina counties. The farm also reflects tenant housing, a local store and a post office.","narrative":"Barnard Farm is a farm district of about 155 acres in the Kibler Valley of western Patrick County, Virginia, spanning both sides of the Dan River and Kibler Valley Road. Its center is the Barnard House, a two-story half-dovetail-notched log dwelling thought to date to about 1829, when Isham Barnard acquired the tract. Frame additions followed around 1851 and in the 1930s, when the house was reoriented and given a Craftsman porch. Inside, grained two-panel doors and a marbled mantel reflect a Greek Revival character and a painted-finish tradition known in nearby North Carolina. A curved, chamfered log bracket supporting the projecting plate is described as apparently undocumented in the region. The farm also holds a granary, garage, post office, early 1950s store, spring house, cellar, corn mill, barns, two tenant houses and the Barnard Cemetery. Sixteen of its seventeen resources contribute to the district, showing how a family farm and small commercial center developed from the nineteenth century to the 1950s.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival; Craftsman","criteria":[],"status_note":"The house, cemetery and some outbuildings remain in use; the Upper Tenant House is undergoing rehabilitation, the Lower Tenant House is deteriorated, and one spring house is ruinous.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.325724-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/6824/41682442/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000338.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000338/5a487d9c7a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000338/5a487d9c7a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barnard_Farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barnard_Farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682442","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnard_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15196795"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/patrick-county/barnard-farm-09000338/"}
