It is listed for architecture and for social history, and the Jones and Embrey families are tied to much of its development.","narrative":"Sumerduck is a small crossroads village in southwest Fauquier County, Virginia, where Sumerduck Road meets Union Church Road. The historic district stretches roughly a third of a mile along the road and holds frame dwellings, two churches, a former school, and two stores built between about 1882 and about 1950. Most houses are vernacular, some with Folk Victorian or Colonial Revival detailing, and the ca. 1885 Henry Broadus Jones House is a Gothic Revival dwelling with steep gables and a wraparound porch. Jones and his family built many of the village's structures, including a store that served as a post office and a Republican Party meeting hall. The 1887 school and two Baptist churches, dating from about 1898 and 1915, reflect community life. Modern building has mostly occurred south of the district, so the village retains a high level of architectural integrity. It was recognized for its architecture and its role as a rural center of social and economic activity.","period_of_significance":"circa 1882-circa 1950","architect_builder":"Henry Broadus Jones Sr., Henry Broadus Jones, Jr. (builders)","architectural_style":"Late 19th Century and Early 20th Century Revivals: Gothic Revival; Other: Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The churches and one store are still in use; the Jones's Store is vacant and the former school houses an antique shop.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.452659-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/6806/41680675/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000337.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000337/986063e8d9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000337/986063e8d9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SUMERDUCK_HIST._DISTRICT,_FAUQUIER_COUNTY,_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680675","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumerduck_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713265"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/sumerduck-historic-district-09000337/"}
