It contains dwellings, stores, a church, a former school and outbuildings dating from about 1838 to the mid-20th century.","why_significant":"The district is significant under Criterion A for its role in transportation, commerce and education as a trading center for the surrounding farmland, and under Criterion C for architecture. It retains a high degree of integrity and the core building types of a small rural community. Three antebellum buildings appear on an 1862 Civil War map and survive today.","narrative":"Bristersburg is a small crossroads village in southeastern Fauquier County, Virginia, where Elk Run Road meets Bristersburg Road. The district covers about 28 acres and includes dwellings, former stores, a stone church, a cemetery, a former school and farm outbuildings, with 22 contributing and 9 noncontributing resources. The earliest surviving building is a store core said to date to about 1838, later enlarged into a dwelling. Zoar Baptist Church, built of stone in 1852, is the visual centerpiece. The 1910 school housed grades 1 through 12 until it closed in 1969 and later became a home. The village served as a trading center for surrounding farms from the mid-19th century well into the 20th, and an 1862 Civil War map shows its church, store and four dwellings. Its stores, blacksmith shop and Queen Anne house with an adjoining country store illustrate commerce and architecture. Now surrounded by large farms, it is among the best-preserved historic groupings in the area. All its commercial buildings are vacant.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1838-1958","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Revivals: Queen Anne; Other: Vernacular (including a vernacular Greek Revival church)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The church is an active congregation, several buildings are private dwellings, the former school has been a dwelling since the early 1970s, and all commercial buildings are vacant.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.506626-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/6806/41680679/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000336.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000336/c0d87c23cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000336/c0d87c23cd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ZoarBaptist_BristersburgVA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ZoarBaptist_BristersburgVA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680679","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristersburg_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712079"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/bristersburg-historic-district-09000336/"}
