It is also the only documented extant example of grave mounding in Georgia, a funerary ritual with West African roots. Its red-clay grave mounds are an exceptional example of a Southern Folk Cemetery landscape.","narrative":"Basket Creek Cemetery, near Douglasville in south Douglas County, Georgia, holds 110 known burials of African-American members of the Basket Creek Baptist Church. Opened in 1886 and still in use, it is laid out informally in irregular rows on a bare, swept-earth lot. Most graves carry roughly carved upright stones, many without inscriptions, and most are covered by one-foot-high red-clay mounds. Church members and descendants rebuild these mounds twice a year, continuing a ritual with West African origins. The cemetery is the only documented example of grave mounding in Georgia. It is also the last surviving trace of a rural Black community of farms, sawmills and churches along the Chattahoochee River, whose Endsley family members were formerly enslaved and later migrated to places such as California and Michigan. It was listed for its ethnic heritage, social history and landscape architecture, with a period of significance from 1886 to 1959.","period_of_significance":"1886-1959","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Southern Folk Cemetery","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still an active cemetery, maintained by the Basket Creek Baptist Church, with the grave mounds restored twice a year.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.914983-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/09000326.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000326/e0fcdf21d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000326/e0fcdf21d8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Basket_Creek_Cemetery_-_Black_Section.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Basket_Creek_Cemetery_-_Black_Section.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207882","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basket_Creek_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q117625302"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/douglas-county/basket-creek-cemetery-09000326/"}
