The original Central Hallway Cottage was built about 1870 by Solomon Pace and enlarged about 1883.","why_significant":"The house is the oldest extant house in Vinings and the only surviving historic resource tied to the Pace family and their Chattahoochee River ferry. It is locally significant under Criterion B for its association with Solomon Pace, who reopened an important ferry in 1894. It is also significant under Criterion C as a good local example of a Gabled Wing Cottage that retains its character-defining features.","narrative":"Built about 1870 on the site of an earlier family home destroyed in the Civil War, this modest wood-frame house in Vinings, Georgia, began as a two-room Central Hallway Cottage. Solomon Pace, son of ferry pioneer Hardy Pace, built it, reusing four granite steps from his father's house. Around 1883 a third room turned it into a Folk Victorian Gabled Wing Cottage, and a fourth room was added in the 1950s. A wraparound porch, wide heart-pine floors, mantels and Victorian trim survive. The house is the oldest extant house in Vinings and the only known surviving property connected with Solomon Pace, a ferry operator, farmer and large landowner. In 1894 Pace reopened Pace's Ferry across the Chattahoochee River, which served the area until an iron bridge replaced it in 1903. The house was recognized for that transportation link and as a good local example of its house type. It now serves as a special events facility.","period_of_significance":"c.1870-1897","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Folk Victorian; Gabled Wing Cottage","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a special events facility; the interior retains much original fabric, and a 1998 renovation replaced the roof and added a deck, activities building and landscaping.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.430391-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/09000325.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000325/55c5366aa1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000325/55c5366aa1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Solomon_and_Penelopy_Pace_House,_Vinings,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Solomon_and_Penelopy_Pace_House,_Vinings,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207601","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134289084"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/cobb-county/pace-solomon-and-penelopy-house-09000325/"}
