It was built by farmer George E. Barnhardt.","why_significant":"The house is locally significant for architecture. It is one of only a handful of late-nineteenth-century brick I-houses in Davie County and is highly intact. It is also unusual locally for combining Greek Revival and Gothic Revival elements, notably the two-tier pedimented porch and the brick hood drip molding over the windows.","narrative":"Set well back from Hartley Road on a knoll in rural eastern Davie County, this two-story brick house was built around 1880 for farmer George E. Barnhardt and his family. It follows the I-house form, with a central hall, two rooms on each side, a symmetrical three-bay front, and a two-story rear ell. A two-tier porch with a pedimented gable dominates the facade, and the central doors have multi-light sidelights. Details such as the wide boxed eaves and gable returns come from the Greek Revival style, while the corbelled brick hoods over the windows suggest Gothic Revival influence. Few brick farmhouses of this period survive in the county, and this one remains highly intact, with original heart pine floors, mantels, and four-panel doors. The property includes several noncontributing outbuildings and backs onto the Yadkin River. Its architecture is the basis for its local significance, and a rehabilitation is now under way.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1880","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: I-house (with Greek Revival and Gothic Revival elements)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The house is being rehabilitated in coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office.
