It is also tied to commerce through Boyd Gilleland's Prohibition-era moonshine production, carried out in a secret attic room built into the house. Proceeds from that enterprise funded several legal local businesses.","narrative":"Built in 1929-1930 off Georgia Highway 9 in Dawsonville, this one-and-one-half-story Craftsman bungalow was the home of Boyd and Sallie Gilleland and their five children. It has a side-gable form, weatherboard siding, wide overhanging eaves, knee braces, paired windows and a full-width porch with brick piers that extends into a porte cochere. Inside, it keeps its open floor plan, wood floors and ceilings, and brick fireplaces. The house is considered a relatively rare Craftsman example in this part of north Georgia. It is also notable for a hidden attic room reached through a closet panel, where Boyd Gilleland ran a moonshine still during Prohibition. The nearby highway led straight to Atlanta, which made it easy to sell to customers there. Profits helped him start a service station, a hardware store and Amicalola Lodge for his children. Sallie lived in the house until 1977. It was rehabilitated in 2005-2006 as an events venue.","period_of_significance":"1929-1959","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements: Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 2005-2006 and currently used as a special events facility called Peach Brandy Cottage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.214202-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/09000268.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000268/be6be8809c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000268/be6be8809c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Gwringle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boyd_and_Sallie_Gilleland_House,_Dawsonville,_GA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Gwringle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boyd_and_Sallie_Gilleland_House,_Dawsonville,_GA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207718","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilleland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16994125"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/dawson-county/gilleland-boyd-and-sallie-house-09000268/"}
