It reflects the railroad's central role in founding Dennison and in supporting its social and cultural life. Its walnut pews, built in the railroad car shops with reversible backs patterned on passenger coach seats, express that link.","narrative":"Known as the Railway Chapel, this brick church at 301 Grant Street in Dennison, Ohio, was completed in April 1871 for the town's Presbyterian congregation. A Second Empire manse, finished in 1872, stands on its east side. The church has red brick walls on a rusticated sandstone foundation, round-arched windows, and an offset octagonal bell tower whose spire was lost to a tornado in 1954. A Sunday School addition followed in 1909. Dennison was laid out by the railroad as a division point, and railroad officials helped start the church. The railroad donated labor and materials, and even laid a temporary spur to the site. The black walnut pews were built in the Dennison car shops, with reversible backs patterned on passenger coach seats. As the first church in the village, it reflects how the Pennsylvania Railroad shaped both the economy and the community life of Dennison between 1870 and 1921.","period_of_significance":"1870-1921","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still used as a church by the First Presbyterian Church of Dennison; the former manse is also part of the property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.422786-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/09000212.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000212/a06dca5c2d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000212/a06dca5c2d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Presbyterian_Church_of_Dennison.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Presbyterian_Church_of_Dennison.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991774","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138753334"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/tuscarawas-county/railway-chapel-the-09000212/"}
