Wells's business ventures in coal, iron and railroads drove the town's growth. Of the buildings tied to him, the house is the most intact survivor.","narrative":"Built in 1883 on the highest point of Wellston's hilly terrain, this two-story Italianate frame house at 403 East A Street was home to Harvey Wells, the founder of the city. It has a low-pitched roof, large wooden lintels over windows and doors, painted wooden quoins and much of its original lap siding. A two-story bay once gave views down both hills into town. Inside, the original staircase newel post and railing, carved entry details and some parquet flooring remain. In the mid-twentieth century it served as a nursing home, and additions from that period were later removed or altered. The house is now vacant and in disrepair, with many windows boarded. Wells developed Wellston through coal mines, iron furnaces, a nail mill and railroad connections, but he died in debt in 1896, and the furnaces, nail works and mines are gone. The house is described as the most intact surviving building associated with him, which supported its listing for his significance.","period_of_significance":"1883-1896","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["B"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and not in use; described as in some disrepair, with windows boarded up and mid-twentieth-century nursing home additions partly removed.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.788004-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/09000211.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000211/a3bb6cdfbe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000211/a3bb6cdfbe-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harvey_Wells_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harvey_Wells_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989452","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Wells_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5677675"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/jackson-county/wells-harvey-house-09000211/"}
