It is significant under Criterion C in architecture at the local level, for its construction, form, finishes and detail.","narrative":"Built probably in 1808, this log house near Chatham in Pittsylvania County began as a single-room dwelling with v-notched logs, a stone gable-end chimney, front and back doors, and a boxed winder stair. A second log pen with its own stone chimney was added to the north, possibly in the 1820s and probably before 1860. Both sections sit under a metal gable roof and were once covered with weatherboards and later asbestos shingles, which have since been removed along with frame additions to the front and rear. Inside, whitewashed logs, wrought and cut nails, carved initials and scraps of newspaper wallpaper record the building's use over time. The house was probably built for John and Nancy Yeatts around the time of their marriage in 1808. It was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of the modest log homes of the area's antebellum small farmers, with a period of significance from about 1808 to about 1860.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1808-ca. 1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a single dwelling; later frame additions and asbestos shingles have been removed, and a tax credit rehabilitation for use as a weekend home had begun.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.175971-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/60/6825/41682560/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000173.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000173/5d697370f9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000173/5d697370f9-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_and_Nancy_Yeatts_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_and_Nancy_Yeatts_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682560","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_and_Nancy_Yeatts_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15229692"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/pittsylvania-county/yeatts-john-and-nancy-house-09000173/"}
