Newton. The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"It is described as an excellent example of the popular Greek Revival side-hall house type, with a pedimented facade gable, corner pilasters and a Doric porch. It is also exceptionally well maintained, offering a model of sympathetic maintenance for houses of its period. It is one of few remaining houses from a neighborhood built up extensively in the late 1840s.","narrative":"Built around 1849 at 8 Sycamore Street in Worcester, this two and one-half storey frame house is a fine example of the Greek Revival style in its side-hall form. Clapboard covers the exterior. The facade has a pedimented gable, corner pilasters, a Doric porch and an entry with sidelights. Along the street frontage run a low granite wall and a wooden picket fence. The house was first occupied in 1849 by S.D. Newton, a painter, who stayed until about 1854. After that the property was occupied by Benjamin Lewis of Spurr & Lewis, victuallers, and by James Lewis, who worked in a local telegraph office. Sycamore Street and neighboring streets off south Main Street, including Charlton Street and Ionic Avenue, were built up extensively in the late 1840s with houses like this one, but little of that residential neighborhood survives. The house and its lot are exceptionally well maintained, offering a model of sympathetic care for houses of this period. It remains a residence, as originally intended.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, the same as its original use; described as exceptionally well maintained and unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.666692-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7928/63792835/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/09000142.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000142/3e46ff977f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000142/3e46ff977f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:S._D._Newton_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:S._D._Newton_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792835","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._D._Newton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7387423"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/newton-s-d-house-09000142/"}
