It was built in 1893 and doubled in size in 1916.","why_significant":"The building is significant under Criterion A for its role in Cleburne's commercial history, as the largest mercantile space in town and the base of the locally prominent Wright family business. Under Criterion C it is an excellent local example of an early 20th-century brick two-part commercial block with high integrity from its 1916 remodeling.","narrative":"Occupying a full city block face one block south of the Johnson County courthouse square, this two-story brick building in Cleburne, Texas, began in 1893 as a harness and saddlery building built by T. R. James. Andrew J. Wright bought it in 1899 for his dry goods business. In 1916 he purchased the adjacent hotel and doubled the building, adding new brick, windows, a canopy and entrances on Main, James and Caddo Streets, making it the largest mercantile space in the city. Its two-part commercial block form has storefronts below and wide, window-filled upper floors, with load-bearing reddish-brown brick and a stepped parapet. The Wright family ran the store until 1976, and the building later held shops. A 2004 project reversed 1970s alterations, and the interior keeps pressed metal ceilings, original stairs and a freight elevator. It was recognized for its commercial history and its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1899-1959","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements: Commercial Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition after rehabilitation with federal preservation tax credits; current functions are business and hotel, with small shops and a restaurant bar inside.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.442893-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/9727/40972726/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/09000139.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000139/d08c64d475-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000139/d08c64d475-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wright_Building1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wright_Building1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100002844","name":"Cleburne Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/cleburne-downtown-historic-district-100002844/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972726","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107320502"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/johnson-county/wright-building-09000139/"}
