Garfield and his wife Lucretia for about ten years, after his time as head of the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (now Hiram College). Lucretia Garfield planned the 1863 enlargement, and Garfield's letters to her document its progress. Garfield later served in Congress and became President.","narrative":"This Greek Revival farmhouse in Hiram, Ohio, was built around 1852 in the Western Reserve style, with the gable end facing the road, a three-bay facade and clapboard siding. It faces the square where the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute opened in 1851. James A. Garfield studied there, later taught there, and became head of the school. After he married Lucretia Rudolph in 1858, the couple rented this house in 1862 and bought it in 1863. Lucretia planned an enlargement with advice from her father, a carpenter. The new west wing added front and back parlors, floor-length windows, a bay window and a front porch. Garfield's letters home describe the work, including his suggestion to use transoms between rooms as both window and ventilator. The Garfields sold the house in 1874, and it has stayed in one family since 1882. Garfield was later elected President and was assassinated a few months into office. A rear shed was enlarged in 1960.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Original house built around 1852 by Orrin or Horace Brown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and occupied as a private residence; the property has been in the same family since 1882.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.763093-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/09000098.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000098/2f38259148-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000098/2f38259148-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"JonRidinger","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_house_of_James_A._Garfield_in_Hiram,_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JonRidinger</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_house_of_James_A._Garfield_in_Hiram,_Ohio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991009","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138648825"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/portage-county/garfield-james-a-house-09000098/"}
