The early section keeps its hand-hewn braced timber frame and many original interior features, while the 1870 addition retains Victorian detailing and most of its original woodwork.","narrative":"Set on River Road in western Henrico County, this house grew in two distinct stages. The first, built about 1780, is a 1½-story hall-and-chamber dwelling with a hand-hewn, pegged timber frame, a two-room basement with a cooking fireplace, and large Flemish-bond brick end chimneys. In 1870 Richard Horner tripled its size by adding a 2-story Late Victorian I-House to the front, complete with a turned-post porch, dentiled cornice and a turned oak stair. The property passed from the Druin family to Horner and later to the DuVal family, who built a storage shed in 1914. By 1994 the house was abandoned, deteriorated and slated for demolition during a subdivision of its land. A new owner bought the lot and carried out a full rehabilitation, later adding a compatible rear wing in 2006. The house is valued locally as a rare survivor illustrating late 18th-century and late 19th-century domestic building.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1780-1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Late Victorian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Abandoned and badly deteriorated by 1994 and slated for demolition, then rehabilitated as a home; described as in excellent condition and in use as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.42498-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/6812/41681223/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000064.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000064/35cb68d0d5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000064/35cb68d0d5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jjmusgrove","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Druin_Horner_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jjmusgrove</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Druin_Horner_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681223","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Druin%E2%80%93Horner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5309007"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/henrico-county/druin-horner-house-09000064/"}
