Washington Street in McLeansboro, Hamilton County, Illinois, built around 1892 for banker Chalon Guard Cloud and his wife Emma Blades Cloud.","why_significant":"The house is presented as a classic Queen Anne residence with strong Shingle Style and Richardsonian Romanesque influences. It retains exceptional integrity, including original woodwork, fireplaces, floors, stained glass and slate gables. Changes since construction have been limited mainly to porches, some windows and the roof.","narrative":"This red brick house at 300 S. Washington Street in McLeansboro was built around 1892 for Chalon Guard Cloud, a banker, and his wife Emma. It sits on a limestone foundation and rises two and a half stories under a steeply pitched hipped roof with several cross gables. Round turrets, an asymmetrical footprint and an irregular plan mark it as Queen Anne, while light gray slate gables with curved, eyelid-like recessed windows reflect the Shingle Style. Heavy red sandstone lintels and sills show Richardsonian Romanesque influence. Inside, the main block keeps its original woodwork, fireplace surrounds and tiles, ceiling moldings and hardwood floors, along with stained glass windows and an inglenook fireplace in the living hall. The Cloud family lived there until 1908, and the Wright family occupied it from 1911 to 1982. It has remained a single-family home throughout. Alterations are modest: replaced porches, a few shortened windows, remodeled kitchen and bathrooms in the rear wing, and an asphalt roof added in the 1990s.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Shingle Style; Richardsonian Romanesque","criteria":[],"status_note":"Remains a single-family dwelling in current use; the slate roof was replaced with asphalt shingles in the 1990s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.109937-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/8929/28892937/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/09000026.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000026/178c029a56-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000026/178c029a56-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chalon_Guard_and_Emma_Blades_Cloud_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chalon_Guard_and_Emma_Blades_Cloud_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892937","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalon_Guard_and_Emma_Blades_Cloud_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16827151"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/hamilton-county/cloud-chalon-guard-and-emma-blades-house-09000026/"}
