It also reflects the role of the general store and local post office as a commercial center for a rural community (Criterion A). It operated as a general store through the end of the historic period.","narrative":"Built about 1903 at Jones Crossroads in southern Troup County, this one-story general store is made of uncoursed local fieldstone gathered from the fields of landowner Christopher Columbus Jones. His youngest son, Robert Monroe Jones, ran the business. The building has a front-gable metal roof, stepped parapets, a central double-door entrance and a rear fieldstone chimney. Inside, the single open room keeps its original shelving, ladders, display cases, counter, safe, wood floor and ceiling, and a carved-wood teller's cage once used as a post office. The store sold clothing, dry goods, fertilizer, plows and car parts, and it extended credit to area farmers. The Avery family leased the store from 1919, bought it in 1935, and ran it into the 1960s. It is recognized for its intact architecture and for its role in rural commerce and mail service between about 1903 and 1958. It now operates as an antique store.","period_of_significance":"c.1903-1958","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"OTHER: vernacular fieldstone store","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a specialty store; the building operates daily as an antique store and retains original interior fittings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.104692-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/08001321.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001321/2748da41cc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001321/2748da41cc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:R._M._Jones_General_Store_(Jones_Crossroads,_GA).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:R._M._Jones_General_Store_(Jones_Crossroads,_GA).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209733","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._M._Jones_General_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16899080"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/troup-county/jones-r-m-general-store-08001321/"}
