The sanctuary was completed in 1936 on a basement built in 1928, and the cemetery's first documented burial is 1889.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the property is a good, intact example of a rural vernacular African-American church and cemetery. It documents a post-Civil War Black community in once-rural Fulton County and its religious and educational life. It is also valued for the church's design and furnishings and for the cemetery's informal historic layout and markers.","narrative":"On Arden Road in Atlanta's Buckhead area, New Hope African Methodist Episcopal Church is a wood-framed, front-gabled building with two asymmetrical towers and a portico on round Doric columns. The congregation dates to about 1869 and has held the land since 1872. A fire destroyed the earlier church in 1927. The basement was rebuilt in 1928 and served as the sanctuary until the main floor was finished in 1936 by Atlanta contractor Alex Milt. Across the street, a 1.86-acre cemetery holds hundreds of graves, with the first documented burial in 1889 and probable earlier unmarked burials. Its informal layout includes limestone, granite and concrete markers and military stones. The property was recognized as a local example of a rural African-American church and cemetery that served as a religious, educational and social center after the Civil War. A 1926 parsonage, much altered in 2003, does not contribute to the significance.","period_of_significance":"1889-1958","architect_builder":"Milt, Alex - builder","architectural_style":"OTHER: Vernacular Church","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The church and cemetery are still in use today; the cemetery is in fair condition with some deteriorated, fallen or broken markers.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.3706-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/08001281.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001281/28b2f49a01-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001281/28b2f49a01-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cynthia Jennings","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:New_Hope_AME_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cynthia Jennings</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:New_Hope_AME_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208268","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134323464"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/new-hope-african-methodist-episcopal-church-and-cemetery-08001281/"}
