Wood.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the clubhouse is significant under Criterion A for its role in local social and women's history and in California's women's club movement. It is also significant under Criterion C as an intact Craftsman building. It was the first clubhouse built by women for women in Stockton, and the club was able to plan, build and fund its own building, which was unusual.","narrative":"This two-story Craftsman clubhouse stands at the corner of Hunter and Acacia Streets in Stockton, within the locally designated Magnolia Historic Preservation District. Built in 1912 by contractor William E. Wood for the Philomathean Club, it has clapboard on the first story, shingles above, a wide front porch with square columns, and a stained glass window showing the club's symbolic La France rose. Inside, a foyer, meeting room, conservatory and dining room lead to a second-floor auditorium seating 400. The club began in 1893 when nine women formed a reading group, and it grew to more than 300 members by 1910. Members raised money through shares to build the clubhouse, which was hailed as the first in Stockton built by women for women. The building is notable for its women's history and social history, and for its largely intact Craftsman design. It is now owned by the City of Stockton and remains a community meeting place.","period_of_significance":"1893 - 1958; 1912","architect_builder":"Wood, William E. (W.E.
