It dates from about 1774 and is enclosed by a bluestone wall with an iron gate.","why_significant":"The cemetery is associated with the pre-Revolutionary War settlement of St. Andrew and the development of the Town of Montgomery. It marks the site of the Anglican congregation's first two churches, and reflects settlement by people of English extraction in a region of diverse ethnic groups. It is one of the oldest historic resources in the hamlet.","narrative":"St. Andrew's Cemetery is a burial ground of less than one acre beside Plains Road in the crossroads hamlet of St. Andrew, northeast of Walden in Orange County, New York. A knee-high bluestone wall encloses it, with an iron gate between concrete piers on the east side. The graves face east, and the markers are mostly simple tablets. The earliest are red sandstone stones with three lobed tops, and two marble obelisks are the most elaborate. The oldest identified stone dates to 1774. The ground was tied to an Anglican congregation that built a log church around 1750 and a more finished meetinghouse around 1770 next to the burial ground. The congregation moved to Walden in the 1820s, and the old church was taken down, but burials continued through the 19th century. The cemetery is listed for its link to the early settlement of St. Andrew and the Town of Montgomery, and for its record of English settlers among the area's German, Dutch and Scots-Irish residents.","period_of_significance":"c. 1774- c. 1826","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still used as a cemetery.
