It is also significant in architecture as an intact example of an urban Masonic Temple, containing ceremonial meeting rooms, a ballroom, club rooms and dining rooms. It was designed by Howard Dwight Smith.","narrative":"Masonic Temple, a five-story fraternal clubhouse at 125 W. High Street in downtown Springfield, was built between 1924 and 1927 on a steel frame and faced in smooth-cut Bedford stone and blonde brick. Howard Dwight Smith designed it, with Miller & Reeves as associate architects. The cornerstone was laid in October 1924, and the Grand Lodge of Ohio dedicated it in January 1927 after a cost of nearly $1,000,000. Inscriptions, carved Masonic symbols and two Corinthian columns mark the front. Inside are a first-floor ballroom, four lodge meeting rooms on the third floor, a fifth-floor ballroom with a painted star ceiling, and a basement with a bowling alley. Original windows, furniture and light fixtures largely remain. The building was recognized for its link to social history, as home to the city's oldest fraternal organization and its charitable work, and for architecture, as an intact example of an urban Masonic Temple. It remains in use as a meeting hall.","period_of_significance":"1927-1958","architect_builder":"Howard Dwight Smith; Miller & Reeves","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Classical Revival (Neo-Classical Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a Masonic meeting hall; the form says the interior and exterior retain historic integrity, and lodges were still moving in as of 2007.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.128136-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/08001195.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001195/854b8285be-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001195/854b8285be-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Masonic_Temple,_Springfield.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Masonic_Temple,_Springfield.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987096","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonic_Temple_(Springfield,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6783763"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/clark-county/masonic-temple-08001195/"}
