Its brick house displays Greek Revival design, and its full set of barns and outbuildings records dairying, sugaring, cider and other farm activity. Together with the nearby Brick Church and neighboring farm, it recalls the agrarian history of the East Whitehall crossroads.","narrative":"Home Farm is a 65-acre farmstead on County Route 18 in East Whitehall, a few miles southeast of the village of Whitehall in Washington County, New York. Its centerpiece is a two-story, five-bay brick farmhouse built around 1840 for the Merriam family in the Greek Revival style, with a paired Ionic-column frontispiece, returning cornices and sunburst attic vents. A brick kitchen wing and a timber-frame shed wing extend behind it, and the shed wing may reuse the frame of an earlier Merriam dwelling from about 1800. Seventeen other contributing resources survive, including a cow barn complex, horse and carriage barn, creamery, sugar house, cider house, smoke house and ice house. Ownership passed from the Merriam family to the Wood family, then to the Bartholomew family in 1871, who held it for about a century. The farm's intact buildings show how a regional farm operated from the 19th century into the 20th, set in a mostly unspoiled rural landscape near the 1826 Brick Church.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival; Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as exceptionally intact and impeccably maintained; the form lists single dwelling as both historic and current function.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.172204-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08001147.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001147/5df15def67-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001147/5df15def67-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Home_Farm_East_Whitehall_NY_Dec_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Home_Farm_East_Whitehall_NY_Dec_11.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322841","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Farm_(East_Whitehall,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706395"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/washington-county/home-farm-08001147/"}
