It is believed to be the only cobblestone building in New York built for office or professional service, among about twenty cobblestone commercial buildings. It is also a representative example of vernacular Greek Revival commercial architecture in West Bloomfield.","narrative":"Built in 1841 on Main Street in West Bloomfield, this small cobblestone building originally housed the Ontario and Livingston Mutual Insurance Office, as an inscribed limestone oval in the front gable records. It is a one and one-half story, three-bay Greek Revival structure with a gable roof, limestone quoins, stone sills and a heavy stone-framed entrance. The front wall uses unusually small cobbles laid about eight per quoin, giving it a refined appearance for the period. Of more than 600 known cobblestone buildings in New York, most are houses; only about twenty were built for commercial use, and this is believed to be the only one built as an office for professional services. Later it served as a store and post office, then a beauty parlor, restaurant, television repair shop and dairy bar. The interior has been heavily altered, but the exterior walls remain largely intact, though some cobbles and mortar have deteriorated. The building is listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1841","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed current function is vacant; condition described as fair to good, with some missing cobblestones and eroded mortar, especially at the rear northeast corner.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.419398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08001078.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001078/801992c817-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08001078/801992c817-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DanielPenfield","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OntarioAndLivingstonMutualInsuranceOffice2020.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanielPenfield</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OntarioAndLivingstonMutualInsuranceOffice2020.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314093","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_and_Livingston_Mutual_Insurance_Office","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7094944"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ontario-county/ontario-and-livingston-mutual-insurance-office-08001078/"}
