It sits on a 12-acre remnant of a former 2,100-acre plantation.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be an excellent and rare example of a late antebellum Plantation Plain house with Greek Revival features. Only 179 Plantation Plain houses are identified in Georgia, fewer than 15 percent were built after 1850, and only 32 have Greek Revival elements. Its interior also retains heart pine floors, hand-planed walls and ceilings, and mantels.","narrative":"Near Shiloh in Harris County, Georgia, a two-story white clapboard house built around 1856 recalls the plantation once run by William Copeland Jr. and his wife Ann. Copeland held 2,100 acres and 74 enslaved people by 1860, making him one of the county's wealthiest men. The house follows the Plantation Plain form, with a central hall, a gabled two-story front block, a shed-roofed rear section and a full-width front porch. Greek Revival touches include a symmetrical facade, square Doric porch columns, and a front door framed by sidelights and a transom. Inside, heart pine floors, hand-planed walls and ceilings, and mantels survive. A rear ell was added in the 1870s. After the boll weevil era the house fell into poor condition before a 1946 purchase led to renovation, and it later operated as a restaurant. Only 12 acres remain with the property. It was listed for its architecture at the state level of significance, as a rare late example of its type in Georgia.","period_of_significance":"c.1856","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival; Other: Plantation Plain","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling, described as a secondary residence; the house was renovated in the mid-20th century and once operated as a restaurant.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.563422-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/08000969.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000969/2440b23567-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000969/2440b23567-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_and_Ann_Copeland_Jr._House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_and_Ann_Copeland_Jr._House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208625","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134365520"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/harris-county/copeland-william-and-ann-jr-house-08000969/"}
