Grogan in a gable-front-and-wing form with Late Victorian detailing.","why_significant":"The house is significant under the architecture criterion as a very good local example of an intact Late Victorian, pre-railroad frame house with a gable-front-and-wing form. It is one of a handful of such houses in the county from before 1895 that retain a high level of integrity and are not severely deteriorated. It keeps its original form and exterior and interior fabric.","narrative":"Built around 1890 on a slight knoll in the French Broad River Valley near Brevard, this one-and-one-half-story farmhouse was home to farmer William H. Grogan and his growing family. It has a gable-front-and-wing form, a rear ell, weatherboard siding and a standing-seam metal roof. Late Victorian details include sawn bargeboards on in-wall dormers, curved rafter ends, two-over-two windows and a front porch with a pierced sawn-work balustrade. Inside, a center-hall plan, multi-panel doors, turned stair balusters and decorative mantels survive, including a classical-inspired mantel with a mirror overmantel in the south parlor. Grogan assembled about eighty-one acres, but the farm was later sold off as a subdivision and the outbuildings were lost. A modern garage added around 1980 sits at the rear. The house was listed as a good local example of a pre-railroad frame dwelling that keeps its original form and fabric.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian (Queen Anne style detailing)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Undergoing a major renovation at the time of the nomination; the current function is listed as work in progress for a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.705943-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/7184/47718493/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/08000890.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000890/30950d6c39-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000890/30950d6c39-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_H._Grogan_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_H._Grogan_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718493","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_H._Grogan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19902332"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/transylvania-county/grogan-william-h-house-08000890/"}
