It was built by descendants of Palatine German settlers and reuses timbers from the congregation's 1787 church. Its painted trompe l'oeil interior, added in later nineteenth century renovations, is notable and reflects a regional trend.","narrative":"Set on a lawn beside Route 10 in the hamlet of Beekman Corners, this small Lutheran church was built in 1860 by descendants of the area's Palatine German settlers. Its heavy timber frame rests on a fieldstone foundation and is covered in narrow clapboard, with a standing seam metal roof. Greek Revival details include a classical frieze and pediment, molded pilasters, a paneled double door within a heavy architrave, and an open belfry with Tuscan columns. Timbers from the congregation's earlier 1787 church at New Dorlach were reused in the framing. Inside, the sanctuary has a balcony, varnished pews and plaster walls painted with trompe l'oeil pilasters, capitals and cornices, probably added in the late 1870s by a travelling artist. Art glass windows date from the same period of renovation. A parish hall was attached in 1940. The church is valued as a well-preserved example of rural vernacular religious architecture, and it is now used for services only in summer.","period_of_significance":"1860-1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century / Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used for services only during the summer months; the congregation has merged with Zion Lutheran Church in nearby Seward.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.994757-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000864.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321772","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s_Lutheran_Church_(Beekman_Corners,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7588768"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schoharie-county/st-johns-lutheran-church-08000864/"}
