A historic garage stands on the same lot.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent and intact example of a c. 1870 central hallway cottage with rear ell, significant locally in architecture under Criterion C. It is one of the earliest houses in Quitman and among the oldest central hallway cottages in Brooks County. It keeps its historic exterior and interior finishes and has changed little since construction.","narrative":"Built around 1870 on West Lafayette Street in Quitman, this one-story frame house follows the central hallway cottage form: two rooms flanking a central hall, with a rear ell added soon after construction. Subdued Greek Revival details include a front portico with a steep pediment on four square posts, gable returns, and a central door with sidelights and a transom. Inside, the pine floors, walls, ceilings, moldings and four-paneled doors are original, and each of the four main rooms has a fireplace. A garage dating from about 1875 to 1900, a well and a wooden dog pen under the house remain. Richard Harris, a brick mason, had it built; it later passed to Maria Ramsey and then, in 1881, to the Norris family, who held it until 2005. It was listed as an intact, early example of its type in Brooks County, and it sits just outside the Quitman Historic District.","period_of_significance":"c.1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Central hallway cottage type, with subdued Greek Revival details","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is a single dwelling; the house was recently rehabilitated, with added piers, upgraded electrical and HVAC systems, and repainting.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.730034-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/08000832.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000832/e95b03286c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000832/e95b03286c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harris-Ramsey-Norris_House,_Quitman,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harris-Ramsey-Norris_House,_Quitman,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207127","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harris-Ramsey-Norris_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16994849"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/brooks-county/harris-ramsey-norris-house-08000832/"}
