The present mill was built in 1896 on the site of an earlier log mill.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the mill is a rare surviving example of a late nineteenth-century rural grist mill, representing architecture and engineering of the period under Criterion C. It retains its roller machines, bolters, sifters and wooden flywheel, and has served as a community gathering place and a learning site for schoolchildren.","narrative":"Bush Mill is a three-story timber-frame grist mill on Amos Branch, about one mile west of Nickelsville in Scott County, Virginia. Valentine Bush and his family built it in 1896, replacing an earlier log mill that had burned. The building rests on a raised stone basement and has a front gable roof of sheet metal. A 24-foot overshot steel waterwheel, installed in the 1920s to replace the original wooden wheel, still turns, fed by a 1,500-foot mill race. Inside, roller machines, bolters, sifters, hoppers, chutes and belts remain largely intact, and the floors are the original wide pine boards. The mill later operated as Bond Roller Mill until 1952. Farmers brought corn and wheat to be ground for a toll, and the mill became a social center. A local Ruritan Club now maintains it and grinds corn on special occasions. It was listed as a rare, well-preserved example of rural mill architecture and engineering from the period.","period_of_significance":"1896","architect_builder":"Bush, Valentine","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Maintained by a local Ruritan Club, which uses it sporadically to grind small amounts of corn; the wheat milling equipment is no longer operable. The waterwheel and sluice are functional.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.322235-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/6835/41683575/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/08000831.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000831/88ebd4c6f5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000831/88ebd4c6f5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bush_Mill_from_southwest.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bush_Mill_from_southwest.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683575","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15206068"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/scott-county/bush-mill-08000831/"}
