It was built by Kinchen Holloway, a farmer and miller.","why_significant":"The house is locally significant under Criterion C for architecture as an intact example of the I-house form, a vanishing nineteenth-century house type in Durham County. It is one of only eight remaining I-houses from the 1865-1880 period identified in a 1991 county survey. It retains its original form and many original interior and exterior finishes.","narrative":"Set on a slight hill facing Guess Road north of downtown Durham, this two-story frame farmhouse was built around 1870 by Kinchen Holloway, a farmer and the miller at the nearby Guess-Geer Mill on the Eno River. It follows the traditional I-house form, with four rooms divided by a central hall, a one-story rear ell, end stone chimneys and a standing seam metal roof. An earlier log house from about 1850 once faced the river, but the new house reoriented the property toward the road. Twentieth-century changes included a new stone foundation, a modernized kitchen, bathrooms and altered porch and gable windows, yet original sheathing, mantels, wire-cut nails and even children's names etched on a bedroom wall survive. A 1991 county survey counted it among only eight remaining I-houses from the Reconstruction era, which is the basis for its recognition for architecture.","period_of_significance":"c. 1870","architect_builder":"unknown (built by Kinchen Holloway and likely his father, James Holloway)","architectural_style":"Other: I-house","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling; renovated in the 1940s and again from 1986 to 1996, with most original form and fabric retained.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.024048-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/7200/47720038/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/08000814.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000814/def7716833-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000814/def7716833-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Willthacheerleader18","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KinchenHollowayHouse1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Willthacheerleader18</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KinchenHollowayHouse1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720038","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinchen_Holloway_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462367"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/durham-county/holloway-kinchen-house-08000814/"}
