It occupies a city block of just over five acres northeast of downtown, with the first burial in 1877.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the cemetery is significant for its late 19th- and 20th-century funerary art and ornamental iron fencing, its link to the founding and growth of Waycross, and its park-like grid plan with coping-outlined plots and ornamental trees and shrubs. Many of the town's founders and civic leaders are buried there.","narrative":"Lott Cemetery occupies a full city block of just over five acres northeast of downtown Waycross, Georgia, bounded by Butler, Tebeau, Quarterman and Pendleton streets. The earliest burial dates to 1877, and the city acquired the ground in 1889. Land for the cemetery came from Dr. Daniel Lott, one of the town's four founders, and the grounds served as the main burial place in Waycross until two other city cemeteries opened in 1901 and 1907. Laid out on a grid with grass driveways, brick, stone or concrete coping around plots, and cedar, magnolia and pecan trees, it reflects a late 19th-century park-like cemetery design. Markers include slabs, obelisks, truncated columns, angels and statuary, and six family plots have ornate iron fences. Over 1,700 burials are recorded, along with unmarked graves and a potter's field area. Founders William S. Bailey, Benjamin F. Williams and Dr. Lott are buried here. The cemetery remains in use.","period_of_significance":"1877-1958","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The cemetery is still in use, and the nomination says it retains a high degree of historic integrity, though some markers are in poor condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.577645-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/08000712.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000712/45fc483fa3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000712/45fc483fa3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lott_Cemetery_-2,_Waycross,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lott_Cemetery_-2,_Waycross,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209857","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lott_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22058904"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/ware-county/lott-cemetery-08000712/"}
