It is also tied to Smyrna's early twentieth-century history, since it was built after a fire destroyed much of the business district and the earlier Munson Opera House. It was the town's first municipal building and served as a civic, social and entertainment center.","narrative":"Built in 1907 on the southwest corner of Academy and New Streets in Smyrna, this two-story brick-veneered building combined town offices with a theater auditorium. It went up after a fire destroyed much of the village's business district, including the Munson Opera House. The town bought an empty lot, sold bonds, and hired local carpenters; no architect is recorded. It was Smyrna's first municipal building. The auditorium, with a balcony, stage and pressed-metal ceiling, was leased to the former opera house proprietor for productions. After 1921 it showed motion pictures, and it also hosted dances, fairs, graduations and school events. In 1954 the auditorium was divided into classrooms for the Sherburne school district, with a dropped ceiling and wall coverings hiding original finishes. Most original features survive beneath those changes, and the exterior retains high integrity. The building remains the center of town business, and the town is planning a restoration of its original appearance and function.","period_of_significance":"1907","architect_builder":"Unknown; local carpenters were hired (no architect recorded)","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still serves as the town hall, housing town offices, the justice court, assessor, historian, a food pantry and a polling place; the town is working on a restoration plan.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.587107-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000699.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000699/b694322818-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000699/b694322818-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Agreen54","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smyrna_Town_Hall-Opera_house.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Agreen54</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smyrna_Town_Hall-Opera_house.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316912","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smyrna_Town_Hall-Opera_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7546743"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chenango-county/smyrna-town-hall-opera-house-08000699/"}
