The first section dates to about 1750 and a second to about 1780, on a parcel with a timber-frame barn and small outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a readable example of the Dutch sandstone building tradition of Rockland County and northern New Jersey, built in single-room stages. It is also tied to early settlement through the DePew and Blauvelt families. The surviving farm parcel includes a barn containing an 18th-century Dutch H-bent frame, one of few left in the county.","narrative":"Built in stages from about 1750 and about 1780, this one-and-a-half-story red sandstone house sits on the north side of Old Route 304, two miles north of New City in Rockland County, New York. It reflects the Dutch tradition of building in single-room units that were enlarged over time. Inside, hand-planed beams with beaded edges, wide plank floors, plaster applied directly to the stone walls and an enclosed stair survive from the 18th century. Later in the 19th century, frame wings were added to the north and east. The property keeps a timber-frame barn that now looks English in form but contains the core H-bent frame of an 18th-century Dutch barn, one of a small number left in the county. A corn crib, chicken house, privy, granary, shed, well and a foundation remnant also remain. Early occupants came from the DePew and Blauvelt families. The property was listed for its architecture and its connection to the settlement of this once agricultural area.","period_of_significance":"c. 1750-c. 1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial: Colonial Dutch","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the barn and outbuildings survive on a large, secluded parcel.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.142962-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000596.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000596/7aeae48956-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000596/7aeae48956-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PETER_DEPEW_HOUSE,_NEW_CITY,_ROCKLAND_COUNTY_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321438","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_DePew_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7173594"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/depew-peter-house-08000596/"}
