Haight, with a c. 1920 parish hall and a modern garage on the parcel.","why_significant":"The church is argued to be a locally significant, representative example of the board-and-batten parish-type Gothic Revival church popular among Episcopalians in the third quarter of the 19th century. It is an early work of New York architect Charles C. Haight, and its interior retains a high degree of integrity. The c. 1920 parish hall was built with matching board-and-batten siding to blend with the church.","narrative":"St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 26 South Madison Avenue in Spring Valley, Rockland County, is a small frame Gothic Revival church whose cornerstone was laid in August 1872. New York City architect Charles C. Haight designed it, and local carpenter Aaron Eickhoff built it. Its form follows the English parish church model, with a main block, chancel, sacristy, small belfry and steeply pitched roofs. Vertical board-and-batten siding and lancet windows give it an understated exterior. Inside, open timber trusses, beaded-board wainscot, original pews and a few early stained glass windows survive. The main alteration was moving the entrance from the south side to the west facade after 1927. A c. 1920 parish hall, clad to match the church, stands to the east. The church is recognized as a representative parish-type Episcopal church influenced by Richard Upjohn and the Ecclesiological movement, and as an early work by Haight.","period_of_significance":"1872- c. 1920","architect_builder":"Haight, Charles Coolidge: architect; Eickoff, Aaron: carpenter.","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the original entrance was moved to the west facade after 1927, and the rood screen has been removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.990579-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000593.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000593/f1c91315ee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000593/f1c91315ee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE AND ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ST._PAUL%27S_EPISCOPAL_CHURCH,_Spring_Valley,_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JERRYE AND ROY KLOTZ, M.D.</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ST._PAUL%27S_EPISCOPAL_CHURCH,_Spring_Valley,_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321510","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Paul%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Spring_Valley,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591126"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/st-pauls-episcopal-church-08000593/"}
