The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as an important example of Lockport's mid-nineteenth-century stone architecture. It is one of a small number of the city's 75 stone houses remodeled in the Colonial Revival style without compromising the original stone walls. It is also tied to the history of stone architecture in Lockport from 1821 to 1909.","narrative":"Located at the corner of High and Washburn streets in Lockport, this limestone house was built in 1856-1857 for Edward Chase, a local lawyer and brother of Salmon P. Chase. It was designed in the Italianate style and was remodeled in 1903-1905 in the Colonial Revival manner after purchase by Wallace Keep. Its Gasport limestone walls remain largely unaltered. Colonial Revival additions include a pedimented entrance porch with composite columns and leaded-glass fanlight and sidelights. Inside, the entrance hall has fluted pilasters, a turned-baluster staircase and classical fireplace surrounds. Richard Crowley, a state senator and congressman who prosecuted Susan B. Anthony in 1873, owned the house from 1870. It is one of few of Lockport's 75 stone houses to be remodeled in the Colonial Revival style without harming its nineteenth-century stonework. It is now part of a nursing-home complex, with the house and its front and side yards forming the listed property.","period_of_significance":"1856-1905","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate; Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently part of the Lockport Presbyterian Home nursing-home complex; the interior retains a high degree of integrity, particularly in the front hall and stair areas.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.699172-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000451.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000451/c0c1fe1419-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000451/c0c1fe1419-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chase-Crowley-Keep_House_Jun_09.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chase-Crowley-Keep_House_Jun_09.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313973","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chase-Crowley-Keep_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5087068"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/niagara-county/chase-crowley-keep-house-08000451/"}
