It was built in 1898.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a largely intact example of a substantial late nineteenth-century rural district school. It reflects the school planning ideas of its time and the prosperity of the local farming community. It was also the first commission of the Welliver Construction Co., a prominent regional contracting firm.","narrative":"Built in 1898 at the corner of Old NY 17 and Lowman Road, this two-room schoolhouse served the hamlet of Lowman in Chemung County, New York. The five-by-four-bay frame building has a modified hipped roof, two-over-two windows, corner pilasters, a heavy entablature and an entrance pavilion with a round-arched transom. Inside, two classrooms and cloak rooms are arranged around an entrance stair hall, with plaster walls and beadboard wainscoting. The land was donated by Ward and Julia (Lowman) Saunders, and the Welliver Construction Co. of Ridgebury, Pennsylvania, built the school as its first commission. The two-room plan followed designs popularized by school architecture books after the Civil War, while the Colonial Revival detailing reflected growing interest in early American history. Indoor plumbing and central heating were modern features. The school operated until 1957, when the district joined the Elmira City School System. It is now vacant and being restored as a museum and interpretive center.","period_of_significance":"1898","architect_builder":"Welliver Construction Co.","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant; the building is undergoing restoration to serve as a museum and interpretive center on the history of the Battle of Newtown and Lowman.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.995473-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000449.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000449/539f3ef924-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000449/539f3ef924-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chemung_District_School.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chemung_District_School.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316798","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemung_District_School_No._10","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5090680"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chemung-county/chemung-district-school-no-10-08000449/"}
