It preserves burials of the Patterson and Hooper families and neighbors, giving a record of ordinary early settlers whose stories were not told in local histories.","narrative":"Set on a slight rise above River Road in Endwell, this quarter-acre burial ground began in 1800, when a child of Amos and Anne Patterson was buried on the family farm. A second child followed in 1804, and Amos and Anne themselves were interred by the 1810s. Members of the intermarried Hooper family and several neighbors were later buried here, for a total of roughly forty burials through 1910, most before 1850. Markers, mostly slate or granite, face north in irregular family groupings with no paths or formal plan. A large obelisk honoring the Pattersons and a wrought-iron fence were added in the late nineteenth century. The parcel was split from the farm by 1839 and stayed with Patterson descendants into the twentieth century. Maintenance later lapsed and the town classed it as abandoned, but the town now owns it and the Union Historical Society is restoring it. Its significance rests on its record of the town's earliest settlers and its well-preserved early character.","period_of_significance":"1800-1910","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Maintenance lapsed after the 1920s and the town classified it as abandoned; the town of Union has since taken ownership and the Union Historical Society is working to restore it.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.653681-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000447.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000447/36bd9aae2a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000447/36bd9aae2a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tkeator","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Patterson_Hooper_Cemetery.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tkeator</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Patterson_Hooper_Cemetery.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316595","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterson-Hooper_Family_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7148426"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/broome-county/patterson-hooper-family-cemetery-08000447/"}
