The gardens he designed survive in their essential layout. The house is also considered a good, relatively late example of Colonial Revival architecture and a work of Wade.","narrative":"Built in 1941 on a long, narrow lot near the University of Georgia, this two-story brick house in Athens was designed by architect Edwin Jerome Wade for landscape architect Hubert Bond Owens. It has a side-gabled main block, a slate roof, small flanking wings and a rear screened porch. The front entrance, with fanlight and sidelights, and two Federal-style mantels were salvaged from the c. 1822 Reeves House, demolished in 1937. Owens lived here until 1989 and designed the gardens himself, with herbaceous borders, terraces, camellias and rare plantings, including mondo grass that he apparently introduced to the area. Owens founded the University of Georgia's landscape architecture program in 1928, directed it until 1973, and served as president of the American Society of Landscape Architects. The property was recognized for his national contributions, for its Colonial Revival design, and for the surviving garden layout, with significance running from 1941 to his 1973 retirement.","period_of_significance":"1941-1973","architect_builder":"Owens, Hubert Bond - landscape architect; Wade, Edwin Jerome - architect","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; a larger garage replaced the original in 1991 and a large oak in the rear garden was recently lost.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.524659-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/08000442.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000442/900def2c2e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000442/900def2c2e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Gwringle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hubert_Bond_Owens_House,_c._1941,_photographer_facing_SW_(2).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Gwringle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hubert_Bond_Owens_House,_c._1941,_photographer_facing_SW_(2).JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85000852","name":"Milledge Avenue Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/milledge-avenue-historic-district-85000852/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207492","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134286315"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/clarke-county/owens-hubert-bond-house-08000442/"}
