A Civil War monument stands on the grounds.","why_significant":"The building is argued to be an intact example of how primary and secondary school facilities evolved between 1858 and 1913, as a private academy became a public union free school and high school. Each addition reflects the design and school standards of its day, and the 1913 wing added an auditorium and gymnasium. It has high design integrity inside and out.","narrative":"Hammondsport Union Free School is a three-story stone building at the corner of Lake and Main Streets in Hammondsport, New York. Its oldest section was built in 1858 as the private Hammondsport Academy. In 1875 it became a public union school, and it later gained high school status under the Regents. Additions followed in 1891 by the Rochester firm Warner and Brockett, in 1898, and in 1913 by Otis Dockstader of Elmira. The 1890s wings carry Victorian detailing such as wood wainscoting and embossed steel ceilings, while the 1913 wing added an auditorium and gymnasium in line with state education standards. The building stopped serving as a school in 1935 but stayed in public hands, housing local government offices, the public library and, from 1962 to 1994, the Glenn Curtiss Museum. Its interior and exterior remain largely intact, and a relocated Civil War monument stands in front. It was listed for its role in local education and its architecture from 1858 to 1913.","period_of_significance":"1858-1913","architect_builder":"A. J.
