Route 207 near Little Britain in the Town of New Windsor, Orange County, New York, built in the 1790s and expanded in the early 19th century, with a c. 1880 carriage barn and other farm remains.","why_significant":"It is presented as a notable, locally significant example of vernacular domestic architecture in northeastern Orange County. It retains most of its post-expansion plan and Federal and Greek Revival-era finishes, since it was little altered after c. 1830. It is also tied to James \"Squire\" Patton, a prominent farmer, cattle dealer and local banking figure.","narrative":"Set on a small rise beside Route 207 in New Windsor, this frame farmhouse began in the 1790s as a modest one-and-a-half story dwelling. Early in the 19th century it was expanded west and north into a five-bay, center-hall house with a steep gabled roof, a stone foundation and a stone lean-to added on the east side. Entrance and porch details from about 1830 show the shift between Federal and Greek Revival styles. Inside, features include the original basement kitchen, Federal wood mantels, an enclosed staircase and a smoke chamber for curing meat. Around 1830 the property came to James \"Squire\" Patton, who built a successful farm and became the area's largest cattle dealer, with ties to local banks. The house was hardly altered after c. 1830, so it keeps much of its early character. The surviving parcel also holds a c. 1880 carriage barn, a stone-lined well, smokehouse remains and farm walls. The house is now vacant.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular; Early Republic: Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Current function listed as vacant; the interior shows recent use as a police training facility and some deterioration, including water damage and a damaged lean-to.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.845893-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000409.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000409/a8ef356b19-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000409/a8ef356b19-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Squire_Patton_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Squire_Patton_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320720","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_%22Squire%22_Patton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6127986"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/patton-james-squire-house-08000409/"}
