It is tied to passenger and freight transportation in Leesburg. It also shows how public facilities were segregated, through its separate waiting rooms for white and African-American travelers.","narrative":"Built around 1895 in the center of Leesburg, Georgia, this one-story board-and-batten depot served as the town's passenger station, freight house and telegraph office. Railroad carpenters probably built it, and it replaced an earlier facility to serve a growing community. Mail, farm supplies and merchandise arrived by rail, and crops such as cotton, watermelons and timber were shipped out. Trains including the Dixie Flyer passed through until the mid-1950s. The building keeps its original floor plan, with segregated passenger waiting rooms at the south end, a ticket office with a projecting bay window in the middle, and a large freight and baggage room at the north end. Its gable metal roof, applied trusswork and sliding freight doors also survive. It was listed for its transportation role, its illustration of racial segregation in public facilities, and its value as an intact combination depot. Railroad use ended by 1970; the city has owned it since 1960 and now uses it for storage.","period_of_significance":"1895-1958","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: late 19th-century railroad depot","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used by the city Public Works Department for storage; the city has owned the building since 1960 and acquired the land in 2007.
