It also represents the first period of intensive resort development on the island, the only middle-class resort on the Georgia coast. Many similar cottages have been demolished in recent years, which makes surviving examples more important.","narrative":"Built around 1933-1935 at 14 8th Place on Tybee Island, Georgia, this raised beach cottage was a summer house for Harold and Margaret Mulherin of Savannah. Later, from 1939 to 1958, Dr. and Mrs. Harry Righton used it as a seaside retreat. The frame house has a hip roof with overhanging eaves and a wraparound porch, and its main living quarters sit on wood posts above a lattice-screened ground level. That level held servant quarters, bath and changing rooms, and two auto stalls. Inside, the original unpainted heart-pine walls, ceilings and floors survive, along with a brick fireplace and pine mantel. Alterations include asbestos shingles over the clapboard and a porch enclosure in the 1990s. The cottage is recognized as an excellent example of the raised Tybee cottage, a type found only on Tybee Island, and as a reminder of the island's growth as the Georgia coast's only middle-class resort. Many similar cottages have been demolished as land values rose.","period_of_significance":"c.1933-1935 - 1958","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: raised Tybee cottage","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form says it retains a high level of historic integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.538031-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/08000349.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000349/c8aa469435-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000349/c8aa469435-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ebyabe","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GA_Tybee_Island_Mulherin-Righton_Cottage01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebyabe</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GA_Tybee_Island_Mulherin-Righton_Cottage01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207331","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134149666"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/chatham-county/mulherin-righton-raised-tybee-cottage-08000349/"}
