The main block dates to about 1790, with later wings and renovations around 1840 and 1870.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the farmhouse as a well-preserved vernacular dwelling that layers Federal, Greek Revival and Italianate features across several building campaigns. It also documents a long chain of owners, many of them related, who held local offices and took part in the community life of the area. The complex retains a high degree of 19th-century integrity.","narrative":"Woodlawn Farm is a frame farmhouse and farmstead on a knoll north of the hamlet of Slate Hill in Orange County, New York. The house grew in stages. Its two-story main block, with a side hall and double parlors, was probably built around 1790. A kitchen wing of reused timbers was added at the same time. Greek Revival remodeling followed around 1840. An east wing, woodshed and wrap-around porch were added around 1870, bringing Italianate touches. Local tradition dates the center section to about 1765, but physical evidence does not support that. Reused hand-hewn timbers found in 2002 suggest an earlier dwelling stood nearby. The property also holds a dairy barn built around 1888 after a fire destroyed its predecessor, and a privy. Owners include Richard Wood, who hosted religious meetings before a nearby Baptist meetinghouse was built in 1792, and Roswell Mead, a state legislator in 1842. The farm is listed for its layered architecture and its long, well-documented ownership history.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival; Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the house was renovated in 2002 and retains a high degree of physical integrity to the 19th century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.017505-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000277.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000277/c4c84b4ae4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000277/c4c84b4ae4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodlawn_Farm,_Slate_Hill,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodlawn_Farm,_Slate_Hill,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320793","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlawn_Farm_(Slate_Hill,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8033015"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/woodlawn-farm-08000277/"}
