It is one of eight surviving stone arch bridges in Durham built under Jeremiah Cunningham, highway commissioner from 1886 to 1896. It also illustrates an early widening method using an iron beam over enlarged abutments.","narrative":"Moore Road crosses a small tributary of the Cornwallville Creek on a single-span limestone arch bridge built in 1887 southwest of Cornwallville, in the hilly western part of Durham, Greene County. Local limestone was laid dry, without mortar, to form a round arch about four and a half feet across and eight feet wide. The bridge was built on the Charles Wetmore farm and linked farmers at the northern end of Moore Road with a sawmill and with the hamlet of Hervey Street. Jeremiah Cunningham, Durham's highway commissioner from 1886 to 1896, built it, and it is one of eight surviving stone arch bridges he left in the town. Later changes include an iron beam supporting a widened roadbed on the north side and two stacked metal culverts added on the south. It is valued as a representative rural stone bridge and as evidence of how roads and bridges supported farming and industry in Durham.","period_of_significance":"1887","architect_builder":"Jeremiah Cunningham, builder","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still in use as a road bridge; widened on the south side with two metal culverts, though it retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials and workmanship.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.262456-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000272.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000272/2ef15908c7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000272/2ef15908c7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Moore_Road_Stone_Arch_Bridge.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Moore_Road_Stone_Arch_Bridge.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317999","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore_Road_Stone_Arch_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6908223"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/moore-road-stone-arch-bridge-08000272/"}
