The church is a largely intact Gothic Revival parish church by architect Richard Hubbard, and the house and rectory add residential and church-related history. Together they extend the district to the Church Street corner.","narrative":"Three buildings on the north side of East Main Street in Canton extend the Village Park Historic District east to Church Street. They face the village park and had been left out of the original district, which ended mid-block. The house at 7-1/2 East Main began around 1850 as a one-story dwelling and was doubled in size around 1890 with Colonial Revival details. Next to it is Grace Episcopal Church, built in 1903 to replace an earlier frame church. Architect Richard Hubbard of Utica designed it in the Gothic Revival style, with rusticated local gray stone, a cruciform plan, a castellated corner tower and stained glass by Mayer & Company of Munich. The third building is the church rectory, built in 1887 for $3,700 and remodeled around 1920. The group was found significant for its architecture and for its social history, including the church's congregation, formed in 1836, and its role in the village's civic and religious life.","period_of_significance":"c.1850 - 1957","architect_builder":"Hubbard, Richard (Church)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Gothic Revival; Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals/Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The church and rectory remain in religious use; the house at 7-1/2 East Main Street currently houses real estate offices.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.777847-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000108.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000108/6bd38b82c8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000108/6bd38b82c8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Village_Park_Historic_District,_Main_Street,_Canton,_New_York.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Village_Park_Historic_District,_Main_Street,_Canton,_New_York.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321943","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Village_Park_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7930673"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/st-lawrence-county/village-park-historic-district-boundary-increase-ii-08000108/"}
