A late 19th-century frame barn also stands on the property.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a substantially intact, representative example of cobblestone construction in Seneca County, with field cobbles, limestone quoins, and stone lintels and sills typical of the Early Period. It is also described as an outstanding example of vernacular Federal style domestic architecture in the county.","narrative":"Built in 1837 for farmer John Graves, this cobblestone farmhouse sits on the south side of Route 318 in rural Junius, Seneca County, on a 68.5-acre farm of rolling fields. The two-story, three-bay main block has walls of variously colored field cobbles, limestone corner quoins, and smooth stone lintels and sills. Late Federal details include a delicate fanlight in the front gable and fluted, paneled woodwork around the entrance. Inside, hand-hewn timbers, raised-panel doors and a wooden parlor mantel survive. A one-story frame wing and a small frame barn complete the historic buildings. The house was listed for its architecture: it is a well-preserved example of cobblestone construction from the Early Period and of vernacular Federal design. Only about 12 to 14 of roughly 20 cobblestone buildings once recorded in Seneca County retain high integrity. The date of 1837 rests on a probate record, an English-made door lock and town highway records. The Graves family held the farm until 1894.","period_of_significance":"1837-ca. 1900","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the walls, quoins, lintels and sills are described as virtually intact to the 1837 construction date.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.783928-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000107.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000107/059baa6185-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000107/059baa6185-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JuniusNY_JohnGravesCobblestoneHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JuniusNY_JohnGravesCobblestoneHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314636","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Graves_Cobblestone_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16982534"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/seneca-county/graves-john-cobblestone-farmhouse-08000107/"}
