It retains a largely intact worship space with slip pews, a vaulted ceiling and original stained glass. It also reflects the growth of Walden's Methodist congregation in the late 19th century.","narrative":"Brick walls, bluestone trim and a tall central bell tower mark the church at 125 West Main Street in Walden, New York. Built in an 1893 campaign for a growing Methodist congregation, it replaced the need for an earlier meetinghouse by absorbing it. That c. 1840s frame building, bought from the Scotch Covenanter Society in 1850, was moved east, placed on a new foundation, veneered in brick and made into the Sunday school, now the fellowship hall. The design is eclectic, mainly Gothic Revival with some Romanesque touches, and features large pointed-arch windows and steep roofs. Inside, the worship space keeps oak slip pews in a semicircle beneath a vaulted board ceiling with moulded ribs. Four memorial stained glass windows were added in 1906. Later changes include a brick classroom addition around 1933, an office in 1952, a new basement in 1960-62, and an asphalt roof replacing slate. The church is listed for its architecture and its well-preserved late Victorian character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Plans by an unknown party; contractor Edwin McWilliams of Middletown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Gothic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the 1911 parsonage next door remains in use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.680671-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000103.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000103/ff0dfca71a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000103/ff0dfca71a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walden_United_Methodist_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walden_United_Methodist_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320781","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walden_Jam-e-Masjid","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7961484"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/walden-united-methodist-church-08000103/"}
