Its cast-stone facade carries a full range of Neoclassical features drawn from ancient Greek architecture, meant to convey integrity and reliability. It is the only surviving building of the banks that once operated in Geneva, since three others were lost to 1960s urban renewal.","narrative":"Built around 1914-1915 on Linden Street in downtown Geneva, this former bank occupies nearly all of a 30-by-60-foot lot. Its brick body is fronted by a white cast-stone facade modeled on ancient Greek temples, with two massive Ionic columns set within a pedimented portico, a denticulated cornice, and a large high-relief eagle in the tympanum. A tall parapet makes the building read as three stories, matching neighboring rooflines. The bank began as the private Mellon Bank in 1910, was acquired by the Farmers and Merchants Bank around 1914, and merged with the Geneva Savings Bank in 1922. It operated until the 1960s, when the bank moved to a new building on Seneca Street. Little of the interior survives, though the vaults, vault doors and original staircase remain. The building is significant as a well-preserved example of early twentieth century commercial architecture and as the only surviving historic bank building from Geneva's several banks, the others having been lost to 1960s urban renewal.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1914-15","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neoclassical (distyle in antis facade with Ionic columns); the form's classification field reads \"na\"","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Subdivided into offices in the 1960s and described as vacant; recently acquired by a small business owner who intends to restore it under the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.324791-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000102.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000102/8fc29294d6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000102/8fc29294d6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Farmers_and_Merchants_Bank_Aug_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Farmers_and_Merchants_Bank_Aug_09.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"14000225","name":"Geneva Downtown Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/geneva-downtown-commercial-historic-district-14000225/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320507","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmers_and_Merchants_Bank_(Geneva,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5435821"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ontario-county/farmers-and-merchants-bank-08000102/"}
