It shows hallmarks of the style based on early English Gothic precedents, including stone construction, a square tower, buttresses, pointed arch openings and a trussed-ceiling interior. It is also the work of a well-known Gothic-style architect, and the 1957 addition was designed not to detract from the original.","narrative":"Standing on a one-acre corner lot in a residential part of Poughkeepsie, this stone church was built in 1921-23 for the Reformed Dutch Church congregation, its sixth house of worship since 1723. Charles Collens of the Boston firm Allen & Collens designed it in the late Gothic Revival style. Walls of random-laid limestone, buttresses, lancet windows, a slate roof and a three-stage square tower give it the look of a small English parish church. Attached wings hold a pastor's office, chapel, gymnasium and, from 1957, a brick education wing, so all church functions fit in one building. Inside are a trussed wood ceiling, brick floors, faux-painted stone arches, stained glass by Henry W. Young and a 1930 Tiffany Studios window in the Case Chapel. Listed for architecture, the church is presented as an outstanding Dutchess County example of its style and fits within Collens's wider body of Gothic work. It remains an active church in good condition.","period_of_significance":"1921-57","architect_builder":"Collens, Charles","architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, though a dwindling congregation is seeking outside funds for upkeep; still in use as a church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.939509-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000099.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000099/00719173f6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000099/00719173f6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Reformed_Church,_Poughkeepsie_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Reformed_Church,_Poughkeepsie_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317448","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reformed_Dutch_Church_of_Poughkeepsie","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7307507"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/reformed-dutch-church-of-poughkeepsie-08000099/"}
