Its eclectic design blends Shingle Style traits with some Queen Anne features. Original interior finishes and period hardware largely survive.","narrative":"Built around 1890 at 312 Laurel Avenue in Olean, this two-and-one-half story wood-frame house reflects the eclectic taste of Late Victorian residential design. The Brickell Brothers, local builders who moved from millwork into house construction and later architectural practice, constructed it. Wood shingles cover the projecting gables and upper story, and contoured gable windows point to the Shingle Style, while cross gables and a cut-away bay draw on Queen Anne sources. A full-width front porch, clapboard walls and a stone foundation complete the exterior. Inside, the original room layout survives, with oak woodwork, parquet floors in three first-floor rooms, a dog-leg staircase, paneled doors, classical mantels and period hardware. Horace Beardsley, an attorney, appears to have commissioned the house. George Oliver, a mill proprietor who gave land for War Veterans Park, later owned it. The house was recognized for its architecture, as an intact middle-class example of its era in Olean. It remains a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890","architect_builder":"Brickell Brothers of Olean (builder); form lists architect/builder as unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Eclectic (Shingle Style with Queen Anne elements)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; interior is described as highly intact, with a modernized kitchen and bathroom and a non-contributing brick garage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.11952-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/08000097.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000097/4f82a40cd7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/08000097/4f82a40cd7-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beardsley-Oliver_House_Apr_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Beardsley-Oliver_House_Apr_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316630","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beardsley-Oliver_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4876685"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cattaraugus-county/beardsley-oliver-house-08000097/"}
